why hitting a home run isn't always your best bet
I may have mentioned to you that one of my biggest passions, aside from my family and providing financial advice to my clients, is baseball.
It's a love I share with my family. James – our Office Support and soon to be Financial Adviser at Renouf & Partners – who currently plays summer with the Geelong Baycats and Winter with the Guild Allstars, has played state and representative baseball, he has played on a US tour was once offered a baseball schooling opportunity in the US, James is also the Guild Lions Treasurer. Thomas our youngest son, plays for both The Baycats and Guild Lions, whilst he is still a student has also played representative baseball and been on several US Baseball tours. Jenny my wife and Renouf & Partners Office Manager, is a proud parent, volunteer at both clubs and a scorer at senior and junior level. My involvement in the sport, meanwhile, is as the Geelong Baycats Treasurer, Team EO and obviously proud parent.
Why is this relevant? To me, my passion for family, baseball and ethical investing are a key part of who I am. So today I'd like to explain the concept of financial advice and ethical investing using a baseball analogy.
Imagine you're standing on the home plate, baseball bat in hand, needing to score one run for your team (aka your family) to win. The way most people envision themselves doing so is by swinging for the fences and hitting a home run. But that's not necessarily the wisest way. After all, home runs only make up about 25% to 33% of runs scored in baseball. So while some people are fortunate enough to strike it rich in one fell swoop, the majority build wealth by working their way around life's bases.
Now, let's say you successfully bunt and make it safely to first base. As the pitcher prepares to throw to the next batter, you're allowed to lead off first base towards second. Consider this your risk profile. Lead off too far and the pitcher can pick you off. But if you don't lead off you might not make it to second base and get thrown out.
Now I'd like you to think of each base as a different stage in your life. Perhaps first base is buying your first home. Second base might be starting a family. Third base could be ramping up your nest egg for retirement. Getting home is reaching retirement.
This is where ethical investing comes into play, giving you the power to invest in line with your environmental, social, political or religious precepts. And as we all know, priorities usually evolve throughout life. While you're young and on first base your priorities might be social. If you have a young family they could be environmental. As your business grows on third base they might become political. And as you get older your priorities may become more spiritual.
The beauty of it is that no matter what your priorities currently are, with Renouf & Partners, we'll always have your bases covered.
